Apple is stepping up its AI game just in time for the holiday shopping season, rolling out new features in the latest iPhone update. The newly released iOS 18.2 update introduces "Genmojis," a feature that allows users to create personalized emojis in seconds, marking a significant expansion of AI capabilities on iPhones.
The update, which was launched on Wednesday, follows a similar update in late October, signaling Apple's deeper foray into AI, aligning with moves made by competitors like Samsung and Google. Along with the Genmojis, the update includes an Image Playground, a collection of AI-generated illustrations, writing tools, and email summarization options.
However, Apple has taken steps to limit the potential misuse of its AI features, placing safeguards to prevent the creation and sharing of violent or hateful imagery. The new AI features are available only on newer iPhone models, specifically the iPhone 16 series released in September and the premium iPhone 15 models from 2023. Older iPhones lack the specialized processor required to support the technology, which has left earlier models out of the update.
This new AI-powered suite of features is expected to boost iPhone sales, contributing to Apple's impressive profits, which already totaled $94 billion in the last fiscal year. The upgrade is anticipated to drive a wave of iPhone purchases throughout the holiday season, helping Apple reach new heights as its stock has already surged by about 30% in 2024, pushing its market value near the $4 trillion mark.
Apple is also expanding the accessibility of these features to English-speaking regions, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK, as part of the iOS 18.2 update.
Though similar AI tools are available on rival devices, Apple distinguishes itself by focusing on user privacy. Most of the AI processing happens directly on the device or in a secured data center, rather than in the cloud. For those seeking even more advanced AI capabilities, Apple has partnered with OpenAI, offering users the option to tap into ChatGPT for additional assistance
